[I] NNTP woes [message #260012] Mi, 26 April 2006 16:09
Torak
Having trouble posting - a whole bunch of my posts end up staying in my
Drafts folder because they spit out an error message:

First:

A News (NNTP) error occurred: Posting Failed (EMP rejected (ph/l))

and then:

Sending of message failed.

The message could not be posted because connecting to the news server
failed. The server may be unavailable or is refusing connections.

I'm using news.chello.se - which in all other respects works fine, so I
don't need to move - don't need authentication to get in, and so on. All
the config seems right. Tried calling the support line:

"Hi, I'm having trouble with posting to Usenet..."
"Usenet?"
"Yeah, you know - newsgroups, NNTP and so on."
"What's that?"

It went downhill from there.

Oh, and I'm using Thunderbird. Any idea what could be the buggeration?

Are these posts crossposted? Which group(s) are they going to?
Is it always the same group or group?

Try that on AOL (when I was still using it to access newgroups, that
is).

Me: "Hi, I'm having trouble posting to USENET."
Them: "Try the 'help' section, that should help you."
Me: "No, I mean I know *how* to post, but most of my posts aren't
making it there and most of everyone else's aren't showing up here."
Them: "Are you using an AOL newsgroup?"
Me: "No, it's alt.fan.pratchett."
Them: "Then I suggest you contact the vendor of the product."
Me: "Vendor of the product? It's USENET!"
Them: "I'm now going to pimp broadband, please stand by..."

EMP likely means "Excessive Multi Post". Either they're limiting your
posting to <NN> posts per <period>, or reject crossposts going to more than
<NN> groups.

Is it a client that would give a reliable error message, or is it dumbed
down product that will print a fake generic error message no matter what the
real error is?

Ask to speak to the newsadmin. If they don't know, ask for their
supervisor. Repeat, rinse, repeat, until you get to speak to the poor guy
at the bottom of the food chain that actually knows what's going on, and has
been asked to implement this draconic measure despite his better knowledge.

> Oh, and I'm using Thunderbird. Any idea what could be the buggeration?

Well, Thunderbird /is/ somewhat dumbed down, like the other Firefox-series
products, so I wouldn't trust its error messages. What's returned from the
server, though, should be correct.

There are more groups?

Yeah, they're all to AFP. No apparent common denominator in length,
content, or anything.

There seems to be no connection to time, though. The occurrences seem
completely random; it doesn't seem to matter how many I've posted, how
recently I posted before, the time of day... But the ones sitting in my
Drafts folder - the ones that didn't post - still won't post. Seems
message-speffic.

Hehe... I'll try that tomorrow - they said they'd give me a call, though.

In that case, the news server might think that it's already been posted, and
trigger an Excessive Multi Post warning because you try to post it again.
See <URL:http://news.individual.net/faq.php?printme#2.8> for details.

Have you tried looking at Google News to see whether the posting actually
made it to the outside world? If not, I'd cut and paste it into a new post,
with a few minor variations.

Checking a bit further, I find this information in the cleanfeed docs:

"do_phl
Turns on the NNTP-Posting-Host/Lines EMP filter. This filter identifies spam
by identical posting-host headers and article sizes in a short period of
time. You really don't want to turn this off."

Yes, you (talking to news admins here) really want to turn this off. It
prevents a user from posting several posts with the same number of lines
within a time frame.
It's the second most idiotic filter I've ever heard of[1].

Furthermore, cleanfeed will re-cache it's information about "recent" every
time you try to repost a message, so if you try to post a 50 line message
from your current IP more often than the "EMPmaxlife" setting, you will
never be able to post any 50 line posts.

To bypass it, add or remove a line. And call and yell at the Chello
newsadmin and have them remove this silly filter, and if they refuse, at
least reduce the EMPmaxlife setting, which they almost certainly have
increased without understanding the ramifications.

[1]: The most idiotic filter I've seen was one that would reject all IP
addresses that ended with .0 or .255, because surely they had to be fake.

Thanks, that link's handy.

None of them have showed up. I'll try just adjusting them a bit and
reposting.

That was possibly the most useful post I've ever seen on AFP. That
sounds like you've hit the nail right on the head - so the admins at
Chello will be getting a phone call tomorrow, and you've just given me
the ammo I need. Thanks!

It seems that you were right - by adding a few carriage returns I've
just got two weeks' backlog of posts posted. Bollocking will occur
tomorrow...

Anytime -- if I ever need advice in urban combat survival gear[1], I'll be
sure to ask you! :-)

[1] Probably the next time I visit friends in Islington, if it's turned as
bad as I've been told.

OTOH, the likelihood of actually being able to speak to one of the
server acolytes is rapidly approaching zero. I obviously don't know
how your ISP does things, but your best bet would be to request an
escalation to the server guys via whatever process they have in place
for reporting server issues or faults.

Don't count on it getting fixed any time soon.

Well, you can start with www.blackhawk.com. If that's not enough, try

Doh, sorry. I forgot to warn that I was linking to what's known in the
